Okay, idk if this is really the right place to ask this.
But i'm looking for like a soundboard recording of a Regina show.
I know there is a ton of them out there on the wonderful Regina Fan Sites.
But I need a suggestion on which is the best quality wise.
I have The 9:30 Club, and Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo. But even those aren't that great of recordings.
But I am extremely grateful that I have those.
Don't get me wrong...

But do you guys have any suggestions?

Is this a horrible question? Confused

I'm sorry if it is.

This seems like a good place for me to ask since I've already unsuccessfully searched for it.

What is the specific policy on taping soundboard patches at shows? I have a good mic, but with Regina it may be safer to go sdb. Anyone know the specifics?

As far as I know, no one has ever rec'd permission for a patch. reg is fine with taping but ultimately it is the venue that rules. At the recent Beacon show I know someone who was asked to stop taping. So there is no set answer to your question. But stealth is your best option.

Bah. It's always a shame to see taper-friendly artists get overruled by big venue and label rules. It's always inevitable unless the artist is vigilant to protect the policy.

Maybe I'll pull my semi-awkward, but effective, stealth taping at the Apple Store, hah. I didn't expect mics to be welcomed warmly there anyways.

Edit: That is unless of course there's a more well-established Stix taper planning to tape that show. I don't want overstep rank here! haha

No such thing as rank...You may catch one song better than another and vice versa...Someone may have equipment troubles...Someone may be asked to stop...You should always go for it...and good luck... Cool

The only reason I'd advise against taping at the Apple store is because I think they're recording for iTunes. (there are severeal "Live from SoHo recordings on iTunes) I would imagine they would be very vigilant about tapers if they are recording it for iTunes. At the same time, I don't know if they're using the entire thing or if they're just going to use portions - a lot of the Live from SoHo's on iTunes aren't very long.
I would say use the video or audio mode on your camera if you have one to play it safe as I doubt they would take too kindly to recording equipment...

Hm, well last time I stealth taped a no-taping show I just used the, surprisingly good quality, built-in mic on my Edirol R-09, and that worked splendidly.

On the other hand, they didn't give me a pat down search at that show. If they do that here, it's no dice.

Hi Sgtcmapsalot,

I'm the guy who's recorded the last year's worth of shows on Respektonline.com. I'm sorry that the quality isn't to your liking, but I do keep putting more money into equipment so that hopefully it will get there.

I feel part of the problem may be my lack of quality mastering/mixing skills (and software). If you would like, I will gladly send you any and all of my uncompressed originals. I would like nothing better than to repost them with a "remastered by" credit and improved quality.

As for the upcoming Apple Store show. I'm not 100% sure (still have to get the time off approved), but I'm probably going to go and try to record I guess. My best recorder at the moment is a Zoom H4N. I'm not sure how that compares exactly with the Edirol except that it's bigger and harder to conceal (I'm the one who andreseng mentioned getting asked to stop taping at last show). I do have a couple external mics, but they're not exactly invisible either.

If we both go for it maybe one of us will get lucky. In any case, I would ultimately love to have every show Regina plays in CD quality on the site, but I can't make it to every show and even if I do I can obviously get stopped, so any help in the effort would be greatly appreciated!

edit: I'm thinking of picking up a new mic for this and any future shows where an extremely tiny microphone would be requried. Right now I'm looking at the Audio Technica AT831R. Basically I want a compact cardioid (lavalier) but I don't want to shell out $1500 for a DPA right now. Thoughts?

Oh dude I wasn't bashing your recordings at all. I hope it didn't seem that way. Eeker

Actually I should say thank you very much.
Cuz I download from there all the time.
I'm sorry if I came off mean...

But I was just wondering if there was like a soundboard recording, or an FM recording, You know?
But from what i'm reading on here and as far as my research is going there doesn't seem to be any.
Which isn't a big deal. I'm sure we're bound to see a Live CD soon!
Hopefully...
Just don't worry about it.

But thank you for all of your hard work.
I really appreciate it dude! Smiler

Ah no I was also not intending critique of the recordings! There are certainly some great quality live tapes! I've recorded one band [my other-than-regina obsession haha] for a while now, and have done recording with mics and soundboards. It's not exactly a walk in the park, every tape has varying quality, and environmental hazards are always huge. Plus, Regina's music is by no means as loud as a rock band. So that makes mic recordings far more susceptible to people in the crowd talking, or just Regina not being loud enough- at least in my experience. So that's the only reason it's unfortunate to see sbd patches be banned by people that are not Regina.

Also, that Zoom you have is very good. A friend of mine has it and it works wonders. Though I'm still unsure how the R-09 compares to it.

And I'd be glad to lend a hand on any show mastering! I'm still learning from a friend of mine, myself, but it's always great to do. At the very least to normalize the levels.

Though now I'm curious. Do you [or any other Reg tapers] adhere to any lossless guidelines? Like recording in .WAV?
Also, I would def recommend uploading all shows up on Archive.org, and then of course linking to them on RSO. That's where most taper friendly artists have their live shows. It also allows direct MP3 downloads, but it maintains the source .WAV lossless files for quality.

There are some very high quality recordings on RSO.
2006-04-11 - Warsaw, New York, NY
2006-04-09 - Axis, Boston MA
2007-10-16 - Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, NY
2005-01-21 - Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY
Plus, several radio recordings. These aren't all of them - there are several more thay dont come to mind right now. There's also the Knitting Factory show from September of '04 that SRG posted a little while back. And there's the Serpentine Sessions recording that Appt just posted from dimeadozen.

BIG TUNA, I sample-listened to the recordings I've got and here's what it came down to:

PRO-recordings:
2006-06-23 Truck Festival, Steventon (incomplete set) - BBC Radio 6 Satellite Brodcast (160kbps)
2006-07-06 Accelerator Festival, Stockholm (incomplete set) - FM
2006-10-03 9.30 Club Washington DC (webrip)
2007-04-28 Coachella (low bitrate webcast)
2007-06-16 Bonnaroo, Manchester, TN (low bitrate webcast)
2007-08-04 Lollapalooza (low bitrate webcast)
2007-09-16 Austin City Limits Festival (low bitrate webcast) - the best of the four webcasts
2009-06-26 Glastonbury Festival (incomplete set) - BBC digital TV broadcast & BBC Radio 6 webcast (mark that as complete if you're satisfied with an audience recording of the songs missing from the broadcast)

AUD-recordings, "A" only:
2003-08-19 Sin-é, Manhattan, New York (A+)
2005-05-01 Le Ciel, Grenoble (A+)
2005-10-06 NYC (A+)
2006-04-09 Boston, MA (A-)
2007-04-30 Warfield, San Francisco
2007-10-16 Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC (A-)

In my humble opinion the best audince recordings. There are few more I hesitated about and can be classified as "A" according to taping standards but are far from sounding soundboard. Those recordings above are as close to SDB as you can get.

Also I presume you've meant concert recordings so I haven't included radio appearences and sessions.
