The perfect cover song for Regina. The Boomtown Rats: I Don't Like Monday's. It's mostly a piano based song and if your familiar with the lyrics, can't you just hear Regina singing, "I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down"? I hadn't heard the song in quite a while and when it came on the other day, I'm thinking this is a Regina style song. She would do it justice.
DISCLAIMER: Now before you go flaming me for speaking such sacralige let me remind you that many great artists, at one time in their careers, have done covers. It doesn't take away from their song writing. It merely adds a new facet, shows versatility, and allows them to make a song their own. It might bring her more exposure too. Based on her TV appearances and touring I'd say she might be looking for the exposure. This way more people might find out what we already know, Regina is a major talent. If you're not familiar with the song or the story behind it you can go here This message has been edited. well.. there's a fun Lamb song called "B-line" that I think she would sing really coool...
"Suddenly I see.... I go BADA BADA BADA BADA BADA BADA Every time you walk in the room No escape for me..... I go BADA BADA BADA BADA BADA BADA Every time you're close to me....." xx _____________________________________ free spektor sheet music: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/regispek/ |

Is anyone going to suggest that 'Ginka should cover something from the Tori Amos songbook? Go on - I dare ya!
I've a hunch she'd do amazing things with Peggy Lee's fantabulous "Is That All There Is?" (my favourite song, dontcha know), with its spooky spoken verses, and natty narrative. |

I'd like to hear Regina cover Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds....
And 'Mein Herr' from CABARET. |

i dont know about the rest of you guys ...but i like it best when Regina...and most musicians in general do covers of songs they wrote themselves......just a thing i have
the worlds got a nose bleed |

I don't mean to be a dimwit, but how can you cover something you wrote yourself? Do you mean compose an original piece in the style of another artist?

actually i was just kind of saying (in a round about way) that i like hearing songs performed by their authors. Musicians i like often do a good job of singing other artists songs.....but im not a fan of covers.....especially recorded ones.

I understand. That's why I stopped listening to radio. Every other song is a cover or complete mutilation of an original piece. However, if Regina were to record a cover I wouldn't be against it. I respect her artistry enough to know she would do the original justice.
Thanks for the reply stwongbad85. (next time I'll pay a little more attention to your phrasing) |

"I like hearing songs performed by their authors"
Does that mean you don't like great swathes of Aretha Franklin; Frank Sinatra; Billie Holliday; Motown, etc? I understand where you're coming from, but there's certainly great merit in the skill of interpretation. There are a lot of bland covers, I know; but there are also many inspired interpretations that equal the original version by the author, and can definitely be considered creations in their own right: Screamin' Jay Hawkins'/Nina Simone's 'I Put A Spell On You'; Bob Dylan's/Van Morrison's 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue'; Dylan's/Hendrix's 'All Along the Watchtower'; Leonard Cohen's/Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah', to name but an obvious few. The act of investing the song with their own emotions - almost possessing it for themselves - reanimates the composition and creates it anew. It IS their song. It's like great acting in the theatre, or on film; Tennessee Williams wrote the words, but Brando brought them to life. The act of interpretation, at its best, can be just as vital as the original composition, that's all I'm saying (and saying..and saying!) I'm sure no one on this thread wants Regina to forsake writing her own songs. I think we might possibly just have been having some...wait for it...fun. |

i think covers kind of haev bad connetations as they're what we expect comptetition winners on tv start search programs to release as their first single - or general pop action in - er general... but i think there is possible huge merit in covers. (can merit be huge? not so sure but i certainly get the jist!) they certainly can exceed the original or even just give an equally awesome but different vibe to it - such as the late johnny cash's cover of Hurt by nine inch nails - wihch is incredible - and i'm actually a huget fan of the ryan adams cover of wonderwall.. and i have an awesome tori amos live cover of smell's like teen spirit. though it can sometimes be frustraiting hwen you go to a gig and the band cover some random ass song that appears to be inferior to their own stuff or alteast - randomass! also i think that with a lot of regina's songs we dont really have clue what she is singing about - sure you interpert certain lyrics but it is often more the feel of song and the fact that regina really gives a shit about what she's singing about and it comes across! hence i dont think the singing of other people's words is nessersairly (hmmm can't spell today!) the worst thing but nor can i imdeadiatly think of any covers that i would particularly think would be particularly awesome... though i think something completely different adapted to the piano and reginarised would be awesome like.... er... some brutal post hardcore?,,, er not so much.... must think... actually must do some revision! last two exams today and tomorrow. not that i wasnt inclined to write a sprawling and epic post anyways,.... er must run away! runaway!!!!
but i think it would be fun to hear people's own home made covers of regina's tunes!!! go on pick a tune!!! and put it on any instrument and do it - i was thinking of doing Us on the tuba... hmm not so much hurrah! nic x if you kiss somebody then both of you'll get practice |

Mikemercury! Good call on the Cabaret, by the way! 'Wilkommen' would be great too. She'd knock Joel Grey into a cocked hat (dare I say it!).

"Words of Love" by Mama Cass and the Mamas and the Papas.
Big shiny tinkertoypiano glissandos; full-throated, bloody-nosed lyrics; the bright, painty taste of ennui with a pinch of self-loathing... Certified gold, Baby! |

"Love of My Life" by Queen. Actually, a CD of Queen covers would be great: Lily of the Valley, Somebody to Love, Who Needs You, Killer Queen, etc. Regina has the attitude and range for it. I can't think of many other artists who do. She might even make Another One Bites The Dust listenable.

The Jeep Song by the Dresden Dolls, Regina opened for them so I don't see why she couldn't return the favor since (I'm not sure on this) supposedly the Dolls covered a few songs by Regina. She could do fun stuff with that song too.
is the war over? i hear the guns but one can never be sure |
