Just so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of my ranting about tonight's show in another thread, I'm posting this in its own thread, from tonight:

Uh, I effin' LOVE this song! I'm sure I'm far from alone in saying... I cannot WAIT for her next studio album. Her newer songs all have this wonderful maturity-- structurally, thematically, melodically, et al. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

REGINA! GET YO BUM INTO THE STUDIO... AHORA! IT'S ALREADY BEEN 16 MONTHS SINCE BTH CAME OUT!

thats EXACTLY what im hoping for..

Songs was kinda the strange, weird album.

Soviet, a more punk, very declarative.

11:11 definitely jazz and flamboyant

BTH was def. pop and kinda juvenile (still very good) just had a little... different feel...

maybe next time will give us a polished, sophisticated sound, i.e. "dolce" "one more time with feeling" and "STM"

sounds good to me~

(and strings

please jesus STRINGS)

Man, I couldn't agree more about the strings. That's one aspect of BEGIN TO HOPE that felt strangely as though she had backtracked, and I can't really understand.

Given the eloquent use of string quartet and cello on SOVIET KITSCH, and the devastatingly emotional way she used to sometimes use cello in her live appearances, the way BEGIN TO HOPE defaulted to synthesized strings was a major disappointment for me.

I also wonder whether "Begin to Hope" itself (i.e.: the song) will make it onto the next CD.

I know I'm biased, but SONGS always felt to me like the "real" album, the one that defined the mature songwriter. SOVIET KITSCH was like this exuberant extension of the same aesthetic, plus some production values that allowed her to do some songs that would have not been the same if just solo piano.

11:11 seems more like an album where she was still finding her voice, and so more of a footnote than a mainstream source of essential Regina style in songwriting or vocal performance, though of course there are some real treasures there.

BEGIN TO HOPE was "tamer" somehow, slightly less eccentric in terms of material, although the bonus tracks on the extra CD are a lot more evocative of the SONGS era stylistically. In BtH Regina abandoned the strings in favor of instruments more associated with rock than classical.

But I have to admit that despite this view of mine (about where the "real" Regina resides), the reality may be that the type of her song I value most (the SONGS-style quirky writing) might prove to have been just another step-along-the-way, a la 11:11, and not a sign of the final destination. If that proves to be the case, I suspect that SONGS will always still hold a really special place in my heart.

If "One More Time With Feeling" is any indication of where this new CD is heading, I'm definitely enormously intrigued. But I guess we just won't know until we hear it. Smiler

I'm biased too. I've always felt like the "real" album was Soviet Kitsch, even though I know that each album is a different Regina, and none of them are anymore real than the other.

I'm super excited about the next album, but also a little worried that it might lack some of the playfulness she's displayed in her previous albums. I'm sure she'll prove me wrong, though...

Well if the new album has songs like "Small Town Moon", things will still be ok with the world.

Best parts of the song are (1) when she starts clapping and stomping when she's singing "I ought to know by now, everybody not so nice, nice" and (2) "it's all about the moooooooon" although she didn't quite go for it like she did in Purchase.

"Alright this is how we're going to do it... make a road... yeah!"

I really enjoy and value a lot of the live recordings more than the album versions. Of course an unexpected lyric that forces the crowd to laugh is very frustrating, but it works out.

But yeah, if 'One More Time with Feeling' is any indication of her next album, it will definitely surpass BTH musically, but we all know what hits can do a musician's music. I can only hope the album doesn't target the typical Billboard Chart music buyers.

I seriously doubt it will. Why should she? She seemed pretty happy before she hit the big time, and she seems pretty happy now. Doing her thing. No need to get bigger...
