Well, if you had to choose which would you rather, Regina live or studio? This is obviously when your listening to her songs on the computer or your music player. I personally prefer studio better as she really perfects her work in a studio. Take Note: Samson was recorded a gazilllion times for BTH before she was happy. And when comparing studio songs being played live, i like them better in a recording studio. With two exceptions, Uh-Merica because of the crowd interaction and you can hear her voice encouraging the crowd to participate. For some reason i love the sound of her voice when she talks...non creepy of course. And for a reason i don't understand Rejazz is beautiful to me live. Also there is probably one live song that i would rather live if it was recorded in a studio. I have grown too attached to the live recording and a studio recording probably would not do the job. The song is Loveology
Now, your thoughts? Why don't we do it in the road? |

well obviously her voice sounds amazing no matter what.
but i prefer live. of course, there are a few exceptions. with real love, i definitely like the studio version better than the live one. but yeah, for the most part, live. ------------------------------ People should fall in love with their eyes closed. Just close your eyes. Don't look. |

Real Love studio version is amazing. i love the unbelievably faint rasp in her voice at the voice. It's near perfect. Also what i love in Ode to Divorce which makes me smile so wide is the way she says "parts", it's like " so break me to small part.......sssssss". Genius. Why don't we do it in the road? |

Yeah, I love that part! And the heartbeats at the beginning... They're great. ------------------------------ People should fall in love with their eyes closed. Just close your eyes. Don't look. |

It's completely impossible to choose.
There are different aspects I like of both. I like studio recordings because they are clear and polished. I don't have to listen to annoying people talking in the background or the white noise of the recorder. But then, during live recordings she does different stuff with her voice that I like better than some of the studio recordings, and she may even put more passion into it. Like in Ghost of Corporate Future, the studio recording is kind of plain (still amazing though, don't get me wrong) but I love during her Lollapalooza set when she goes "all your food is frozen and NEEDS to be defrosted!" so much better. And the ooOOOooo's she sometimes puts in Fidelity. Like I said before. It's impossible to choose. |

oh i love them ooOOOooo's. i think it makes fidelity more of a singalong song as much as it is

I totally agree!! ------------------------------ |

I'm not sure if you were expecting to have someone ask, but which live versions of Rejazz do you have? I only have ONE live version. It's from the legendary 2005 Bowery show that lasted for 30 songs... *epic & dreamy* Bowery Homecoming Show, which incidentally, I am listening to RIGHT NOW. This message has been edited. This is a great discussion.. even though i could never choose.
Here are some pros for each Live: she can be so extravagant and flamboyant, even more than on the CDs! Her personality can really shine through- whether extroverted, or even shy, during a live performance. It also if a HUGE plus to know that an amazing recording artist, like regina, is equally, if not more, outstanding LIVE. There's nothing worse than enjoying someones music then finding out they can't even sing/play. Also, every live show is different, so new intricacies give us insight to her genius. New melodies, variations... hums and noises.. Something reg also has LIVE that a lot don't is that she REALLY can connect with an audience. She can captivate and move people-- whether 20 or 2,000. That makes any performance lightyears better. STUDIO: As egocentric as it sounds, regina's studio songs -- privately recorded-- make me think that she and i are enjoying it together. Kind of like SHE is singing to ME. (partly why i sometimes dislike BTH because of some distractions) [still love it though] But when its a late night and i put "songs" on, it's almost as if regina is revealing her secrets to me in words, characters, and melody. also, regina's voice in the studio is so clear and endearing. Not to mention she is crazily versatile. From a soft ode to divorce to a rumbling Apres Moi... keeps me interested! As a musician, recording privately (or as private as a studio recording is nowadays) is a much different feeling than actually playing live. In your privacy, you are playing for an imaginary audience, clones of the person you are singing to in your head.. Maybe not even singing to anyone but yourself. But live, the dynamic is altered. (probably what i most admire about regina is her ability to alleviate that line and let her audience really be INSIDE her music, similar to an album) the end. (not really but i know no one will read somethin' this long!! ____ New York is bigger than a pirate ship, the sun makes everything look like gold and silver ____ |

Just to be the devil's advocate here, I'm interested to hear vocal layering on the back-end of Loveology. Listen to 4:10-4:30 of the Bowery performance (track 8) to see what I mean. She stop-gaps and jumps between lead and backup vocals, as she also does in a handful of other songs. There's also some string accompaniment in that version, which further begs a studio version. I'm thinking along the lines of the instrumentation of "Us" would be incredible. Her vocals need to be allowed to shine though, as they were for the tracks recorded during the "Songs" session. They sounded as if she was right there, and not some polished recording. That is where the heart of Loveology resides. Extra instrumentation and layers though, could make that heart beat nicely. ---if we eat our soup in the rain, we'll never run out--- |

Wow you hit it on the head! i know right what you mean. I know regina could make an AMAZING studio version. strings.. layering..ahh it makes me happy. But i am SO SO attached to that one recording (Tonic) that i could hardly bear anything else.. maybe a b-side... an overproduced loveology would kill meh. but WTF regina would never even mess it up. i underestimate her jeez. ____ New York is bigger than a pirate ship, the sun makes everything look like gold and silver ____ |

Exhibit #1 - Music Box "Annnd sing another melody com-pleee-eette-laaghph... " Sure the Music Box studio recording conveys Regina's amazingness to most people (but considering that the fucking noises in Bobbin' for Apples went right over people's heads), I think live performance wins with examples such as this. She is embodying the character after all, not simply emvoicing it. Yes, I know that's not a word :P ---if we eat our soup in the rain, we'll never run out--- |

Haha. I found this post on youtube once by this person who thought regina was actually throwing up at a show. It made me laugh. (Now that would really be embodying the character...) |

Regina: Live or Studio?
