Sarah Blasko. She is a super talented female artist from Australia. First song I recommend listening to is "Queen of Apology."

Joanna Newsom. You'll either love her or want to scream when you hear her music. She plays the harp and sings along (in a very unique voice). Again, an amazing female artist instrument and lyric wise, although I am impartial to her vocals. Listen to "Peach, Plum, Pear" from The Milk-Eyed Mender album.

Sufjan Stevens. He is a very upbeat male artist. You may have heard his song "No Man's Land" on the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. You'll love him.

Everyone add on to this list!

Joanna Newsom is amazing! I love her almost as much as Regina. She is like a test, because only cool people will listen to her. She is even more hard core than Regina. I think I am going to listen to her right now.

Nellie Mckay!

My second favorite right next to Regina. Just as witty.

Patti Smith, I'm actually surprised that nobody has compared Reg to her yet.

I'm just amazed at all these new female singer-songwriters I'm finding in the last 6 months. It's like we're in a boom!

Jesca Hoop, whom I was made aware of by SOMEONE here on the stix, but I can't remember who now. :/

She's unusually good, surprisingly good, quirky and creative, with really interesting production and texture in her mixes -- lots of unusual choices and subtleties of detail in the tracks. None of that would matter so much if the songs weren't also quite good indeed, which they are.

I also think Brookyn's own St. Vincent (real name: Annie Clark) is on her way to something very substantial. Her first album ("Marry Me") is interesting, with a couple of great songs that stick with you, but I suspect it's only going to get better from this point.

Ingrid Michaelson. Can't really explain why. Like Regina she just seems to be pretty endearing as a person and a performer. A few of the songs have really won me over, and I think "Breakable" is pretty much of an instant classic, with a melody that unfolds gracefully over the same open 5th chord over and over with other chords implied only by where the bass line goes. It's really kind of a brilliant song the more you peer at it (or play it on the piano).

Lisa Germano. Really dark. Really odd. But very sincere and talented. Like Ingrid Michaelson, someone not relying on some kind of supermodel-y looks to establish a career. I really like about half the songs on each of her CDs, but even the other half are interesting.
