Wow, what a song. To me this could be about many things:
* Orwellian dystopia * Being part of a Borg collective, substituting machine parts for organics * How we are coping with technology(she mentions email, social networking sites) The "pre-war, post-war apartment" thing to me at least alludes to the Orwellian concept of rewriting history at a moment's notice. Meaning, one day the government says we're at War with Eastasia, and not Eurasia. Then the next day they say we've always been at war with Eurasia and at peace with Eastasia. Those who've read 1984 know what I'm talking about. Also the lyric "And I’m upgraded daily All my wires without traces" Perhaps alludes to a future when we've all become cyborg who get out daily software updates that changes us without traces. We change and don't even know it. This is a monster. This message has been edited. Last edited by: mod, |

This song fascinates me. I'm not quite sure what I think it means yet but damnnn do I love listening to it on repeat. I agree with your ideas
and also maybe dealing with the music industry which is a machine if you think about it... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE FAMOUS FLOWER OF MANHATTAN..... Don't you ever miss me? Don't you ever miss meat? Don't you ever mince meat? Don't you ever mincth meat? |

The song is basically a warning about what technology is doing to our humanity and saying "hey, let's not throw away our humanity just like that for technology sake".

On her myspace, Regina calls David Bowie an influence ...
Does Bowie have any songs tackling this subject? |
I was just thinking of the general sci-fi/apocalyptic feel of songs like Five Years (or anything on the Ziggy Stardust album) and Space Oddity.
But since you mention Orwell: "[Bowie's] Diamond Dogs was the product of two distinct ideas: a musical based on a wild future in a post-apocalyptic city, and setting George Orwell's 1984 to music." (wikipedia) |

"My eyes are bifocal, my hands are sub jointed" alluding to modern technology altering the human body? Maybe she's even pointing to our inevitable evolution into cyborgs.

interesting tidbit.
According to the lyric booklet in the album (yayness!), her hands are sept-jointed. --------------------- <.< >.> o.o hello there. |
I'm not surprised her hands are sept-jointed the way she plays piano on "Far"!

I agree, this song is super Orwellian. And 1984 just happens to be my favorite book, so...
~~~~~~~ God, I pity the violins In glass coffins They keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing |
huh. that lyric has always stood out to me. sept-jointed? how? if you think about how your hands work, it is beyond me where the number seven came from. unless her fingers are sept-jointed because she is artificially improved?? but i never thought that lyric was alluding to actual modifications of the body- i interpreted it as just expressing the human body in terms of robotics (bifocal eyes make sense). *** *holds an atlas of Middle Earth while playing Back of a Truck on repeat* "And look, Numenor was a volcanic island located on a divergent plate boundary, which eventually collapsed in on itself, causing the whole Atlantis scenario! And this song is crazy!" *blank stares from suite-mates* "...why is no one as excited about this as I am?!!" |
Exactly, she's been modified by cyberneticists to have extra fingers to play the new melodies for the future... |
^^ i guess what really confuses me is that our hands actually have 15 joints, not including the wrist, of course. are her hands simplified? seven just seems like a random number. i guess you could be right with the two extra fingers thing...
haha. maybe i am overthinking this. i need to go to bed. *** *holds an atlas of Middle Earth while playing Back of a Truck on repeat* "And look, Numenor was a volcanic island located on a divergent plate boundary, which eventually collapsed in on itself, causing the whole Atlantis scenario! And this song is crazy!" *blank stares from suite-mates* "...why is no one as excited about this as I am?!!" |
Actually the human hand has 14 joints.
I love that THIS is the controversial line that we're getting worked up about while the rest of the world is like "holy biscuits she said god a bunch of times and made dolphin noises!"
Well that's because we're real fans and they're idiots who notice only the trivial things. |
"so here i am writing a note to the never world that is the internet.... the internet, of course, is one of the greatest gifts we have these days, so we gotta love it and pet it and thank the wires everyday..."
*i think she meant "newer" from her myspace blog in 2005... Just reminded me of machine so I wanted to post it here somewhere =) (and you were talking of the number 7 in sept-jointed? well... Seven is the divine number and the number of perfection, right? So I believe she's talking about us being improved...) ----- "Now, (in the event of emergency), please know that this was written late at night. On a tour. In a hotel room. By candle light. In the 13th century. During a war." |
Doesn't this thread belong in "Lyrics" instead of "far"?
She won't make a sound, alone in this fight with herself and the fears whispering if she stands, she'll fall down. So stand in the rain... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *runs across room spraying Glade* "Ow! Ow!" My eyes smell like Raspberries!" |
Haha, that was the quickest transfer ever!
