This song perplexes me to no end.
She won't make a sound, alone in this fight with herself and the fears whispering if she stands, she'll fall down. So stand in the rain... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *runs across room spraying Glade* "Ow! Ow!" My eyes smell like Raspberries!" |

Let's look at the lyrics first:
"A boy on a train with a birthmark on his forehead Listening to language tapes, and all he hear is birds Everyone laughs, 'cause he brings his own chair to the office Convinced that the cushions will give him sturdier thighs The muscles of the intellectuals are atrophying Nobody's running, nobody's hiding They're lit by a light that isn't even the sun Lit by a light that isn't even the moon Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Maria Maria Maria Now, how many times have I told you not to go there? How many times have I begged you not to go? And how many times have you snuck down to that cellar Just to watch how the roots begin to grow straight up through our floor? The muscles of the intellectuals are atrophying Nobody's running, nobody's hiding They're lit by a light that isn't even the sun Lit by a light that isn't even the moon Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Ave, Ave, Ave, Ave Maria Maria Maria Maria A boy on a train with a birthmark on his forehead Listening to language tapes, and all he hear is birds " ~~~~~~~ God, I pity the violins In glass coffins They keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing |

For me, "Ave Maria" is about trying to learn a language, or at least learn something new.
You don't have to be a smarty pants to learn a new language. There are many "uneducated" people who still manage to be bilingual or sometimes trilingual, because of their culture or situation or whatever. So in this song, the boy is trying to learn a language, but what he hears on the tape sounds like birds, not words to him. And the muscles of the intellectuals are atrophying because they're sitting and studying in seclusion and not being active and part of life. He's thinking to himself, I don't have to be a genius to learn this language, even though these other people are lit up by something that I'm not. So he tried sounding out the words: "Ave, av, av, ave Maria..." ... /my thoughts. ~~~~~~~ God, I pity the violins In glass coffins They keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing |

that's a really interresting take on it. i like how you're able to incorperate all of the parts into your interpretation! brilliant!
do you think there's a deeper meaning to be taken from the song, or it's just a creative look at learning something deemed "academic"? She won't make a sound, alone in this fight with herself and the fears whispering if she stands, she'll fall down. So stand in the rain... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *runs across room spraying Glade* "Ow! Ow!" My eyes smell like Raspberries!" |
